When most of us think of arthritis we assume that it is a condition affecting older people and that it is a simple sign of advancing years. However, neither of these assumptions is completely true, in fact arthritis is the leading cause of disability in people of less than fifty five years old.

Arthritis is a general categorisation of many different conditions whose common feature is inflammation and damage of the joints. Arthritis includes the more obvious conditions such as osteoarthritis (commonly called ‘wear and tear arthritis’) and rheumatoid arthritis, but also includes gout and more severe conditions such as systemic lupus and ankylosing spondylitis.

Given the broad range of arthritic conditions it is not surprising that the range of treatments is equally broad. For example some forms of osteoarthritis can be partially relieved or even completely cleared by a loss of weight; increased weight causes extra pressure on the system of cartilage and lubricant between our bones. Some forms of gout can be treated with a change in diet. Some conditions can be treated surgically or with drug treatment. Sadly not all conditions respond to currently available treatments and with long term medication patients need to be mindful of side-effects.

Transcutaneous Spinal Electroanalgesia (TSE) is a drug free treatment for the pain associated with arthritis. TSE tends to reduce pain by having a direct effect on pain processing within the spinal cord. In this way, it can reduce pain arising from several joints simultaneously and allow mobility to be restored and thereby improve muscle tone which can improve quality of life for arthritis sufferers.

TSE has no known side affects and can be used as often as required. You simply place two pads on your back (one at the back of the neck and one in the middle of your back on your spine) and switch it on, it is particularly effective for pain arising from arthritis in the back, hips and knees.
